(Tech) Nerd Alert
This summer there was one class that I was excited about–Internet advocacy. Apparently, I was the only SOC student excited about it because no one else registered for the course. On very last day of spring semester (two weeks ago) the department sent out an e-mail saying that it was cancelled.
Tonight I was in the AU bookstore buying materials for my crisis communication class when I found the books for the Internet advocacy course. The professor must have ordered them before it was cancelled.
“Oh!” I thought. “I could probably read the books on my own and e-mail the professor for the syllabus.” Then I looked at the books. I had already read five of the required ones on my own. Two of the remaining ones were on my reading list for summer fun books, and I wrote down the the third title.
I left the bookstore feeling rather nerdy. First of all, I was willing to take on three extra hours on my own. Also, how often to you read books for fun that end up on a syllabus? It’s only happened to me once before when my western civ prof let us read Sophie’s World, one of my absolute favorite books, for extra credit.
Later, my professor was catching me up on the class that I missed Monday night. He handed me a press release from Pew announcing the Typology of Information and Communication Users study. I looked down and laughed. Two weeks ago, I found the report and literally forwarded it to everyone in my department at work with the type of glee that accompanies kids on Christmas morning. Even though I had turned in my thesis the night before, I stayed up late reading it cover to cover. Then I ended up posting it on TechRepublican. Pew has become my new Helen Fielding.
Which brings me to ask–which is worse? Blonde GFTS obsessed with chick lit, or redhead GFTS obsessed with communication and technology. Bridget Jones is still my hero, but now she has a blog instead of a diary.
ohmygosh i never knew you were such a nerd!!! i still like you though. and i love the sassy red hair!
