What’s a Good Rumor?
I have to write a 5 page paper on a rumor or urban legend for my crisis comm class tomorrow night. (What? Me procrastinate?) Any suggestions?

Oh my gosh, there’s so many. The Neiman-Marcus cookie recipe scandal is probably so common all your classmates are already writing about it. But then again, maybe not?
Here are some other common “legends” (all false)
- Everyone in the world thought it was flat before Chris Columbus proved otherwise. (in fact, almost everyone already KNEW it was round. Most just didn’t know how big it was. Except even that had been calculated, correctly, several hundred years earlier…)
- There were no Bibles written in the vernacular before Martin Luther wrote a German one. (in fact, there were MANY vernacular Bibles, including German ones, before M.L. came on the scene. He couldn’t have sparked the reformation all on his own, you know! Right guy, right place, right time…)
Okay, ’nuff for now. Good luck on the paper!

I say the one about orange juice man. That’s the guy who had all sorts of LSD on him, got chased by the cops, and either ate it all or went into a river, a pool, or a lake to get away from them. Long story short, the acid seeps into his skin, and he stays tripping forever. The rumor is that he believes himself to be a tall glass of oj, and, if he sits, he’ll spill himself all over the place.
It was a popular one in high school. Everyone had a cousin who knew the guy.
Good luck with it. And don’t forget your MLA citations!

You can always go to www.snopes.com They have a lot of interesting rumors listed.

The assignment was to go to snopes or a similar web site. I decided to write about Tampax Pearl. Not only is it’s about tampons, so there’s fun shock value, but it’s an e-mail hoax that’s still floating around the web.

-the looking into a mirror and saying bloody mary
-thiefs stealing your kidney and packing you in ice with a note to call 911
-needles in the theatre seats that contain aids
i’m laughing just thinking about these.
