Real Women’s Voices
Yesterday, I went to Real Women’s Voices, sponsored by Susan B. Anthony List. It was refreshing to sit in a room with other articulate, pro-life women.
Kellyanne Conway gave a report about polling information and public opinion. Fascinating stuff. We’re fighting this tooth and nail battle over an abortion-on-demand “right” that only about 12% of our country supports. Amazing. About 75% of the country supports limiting abortion but poll questions only ask, “Are you pro-life or pro-choice.” Most people fall somewhere in the middle. When given options, 75% of Americans prefer some type of limitation on abortions.
The most interesting part was a discussion on using the right words when talking about abortion. It may sound Luntzian, but word choice matters. Legally, abortion isn’t “murder.” It’s killing unborn babies. We shouldn’t refer to it as murder. There aren’t “choices” but decisions. The term “anti-abortion” is actually wrong since the pro-life movement has positions on end-of-life issues.
Many of the tactics that people championed are frankly out of date. Perhaps I’m stuck in the tech sphere, but the most sophisticated idea given was “e-mail your friends the letter to the editor that published in your paper.”
This possibly explains the current state of the National Right to Life web site.
