Saving Time on the Web

Monday, August 18th, 2008

If you’re new to the world of social media, you’re probably thinking, “how on earth am I supposed to keep up with all of this?” Don’t worry. Even the experts think that.

A great way to manage all of this information is a RSS Feed Reader. Google Reader is a great one to use and completely free. Other ones include Bloglines or Netvibes (my favorite).

A RSS reader allows you to subscribe to web sites and blogs. Every time content is updated, the information will be sent to your reader. This allows you to access one site rather than typing in web address after web address. You’ll recognize an RSS feed by the little orange box logo.

Click here for a tour of Google Reader.

What does RSS mean?
RSS (real simple syndication or rich site summary). This is an additional code written into web sites that allows users to subscribe to web sites or blogs with a Feed Reader. Every time the site is updated, the new content will be sent to subscribers. This saves time by presenting all your favorite sites in one location. Readers will highlight or bold updated content so that you know to click on it.

RSS is a great resource to add to your page. Most news sites and blogs offer it to increase readers and ensure that their updated information is being read. Subscriptions to RSS feeds can also be measured, which helps you track how many people are reading your blog or web site.
